I am not perfect. Nobody is. So during my vacation I ate fish which makes me a pescetarian or pescatarian on travel. There's no reason to beat yourself up trying to stick to a strict vegetarian diet when you know that most of the food choices around you have some sort of hidden animal derivative sneaked in. They lie to you on the label and packaging advertisements. You cannot fight city hall, so they say - you can only try and just live it.
You can never be sure that the food you're eating is absolutely vegan unless you see them make your food, eat just a fruit and no cooked meals. So yeah, I ate fish because I am imperfect. I have flaws and imperfections.
To me, eating all vegan or vegetarian food when traveling is a lonely thing to do. Though, I surely refuse to eat or even touch the obvious stuff like bacon, ground up animal flesh like breakfast sausages and scrambled eggs that are served as free continental breakfast in hotels. I eat my fruits for breakfast, always.
Here's a video of me eating my Sapote while everyone else ate their continental breakfasts:
My husband and I just went on vacation in the outskirts of Miami in the Biscayne Bay area to be specific. While there, we rented a small old boat right at Biscayne Bay that's good enough to take us to the bay and experience the area to find out if it fits our retirement dreams. The boat was nothing luxurious, the GPS did not work well and we got lost but we enjoyed the day swimming in calm clear waters. Later in the week we traveled to Fort Lauderdale to experience the area as well.
The boat ride in Biscayne Bay reminded me of the movie 'Cast Away' with Tom Hanks where he got stranded on an island and lived on fish for 4 years until he got his way back to civilization being rescued in the middle of the ocean. Tom Hanks then, was a pescetarian or pescatarian the whole time living off the sea! Yep, he did that just to survive.
While in Fort Lauderdale, we walked down the oceanfront's strip mall gallivanting the fort's attraction area where we stumbled upon Bubba Gump Shrimp Company restaurant. Again it reminded me of the 'Cast Away' movie of Tom Hanks. Maybe because Forrest Gump is also a Tom Hanks movie.
So we ate there... and I had fish. I ordered Forrest Gump's special and my husband had the shrimp scampi. You put the sign that says: 'Run Forrest Run' when you're not ready to order and flip it to say: 'Stop Forrest Stop' when you're ready to order. See, being flexible is fun!
After all, shrimp is the fruit of the sea according to Bubba. You can broil it, bake it and etc. right? Nori is the vegetable of the sea, and the shrimp is the fruit. I hope we can all agree!
I just have to admit that seafood is definitely in my DNA. This is the reason why I don't want to call myself a vegetarian or vegan because I eat fish every so often. Though I prefer wild caught seafood for sure!
My message is that, I just want to eat clean simple natural unprocessed food and still prefer vegetarian food and live my life stress free from all the noise about diets.
You see, in my opinion (everybody has their own right to express their own) the problem is not the meat. The problem is actually how the meat is raised and prepared. I still would not choose farmed fish because of the rubbish they feed on. And I still prefer my fruits and vegetables over any type of food.
Below is a video eating in a Cuban restaurant at Calle Ocho Little Havana in Miami. The food was fine complete with Cuban song and Cuban entertainment.

My name is Pura. That's pronounced as Poorra with a short 'ooh' sound and an emphasis on the 'r'. Italians call me Poora which is close enough. Spanish folks also call me Poora which is about right. Here in America, they call me Pyura or Pawra - it's a cruel world. Hmm. My mother called me Nene, which means baby girl in Filipino.
